Start to Freshers Week....

Today was the first day to the Freshers Week...and is the best day of University so far....I remember writing my first entry for freshers week at the start of last year, I was all over the place, anxious, scared and out of place....but today was different. Since I knew my way round campus, got there early...straight to the Prayer Room!!!! Met up with some sisters from ISOC and got familiar with sisters. It felt much better.

Campus was really quiet in the morning...but I must say that as the morning progressed so did the student population.It was swarming with new students, people standing with placards and boards encouraging students to go for 'drinks' and be part of a party. Dressed as cartoon characters....not our cup of tea.

My task was to introduce other sisters to ISOC...outside Bosworth building (pharmacy sisters)...to be honest I think I done well for my first day. Spoke to sisters, introducing them what ISOC can offer them. It was amazing...all those things I wanted to say for so many months...i was able to share with first year students.

It was an amazing day...I think and hope and pray to Allah that this is the start of something good and positive. I want to be a means of Dawah...guidance for the sisters!!!

A spacial mention...I hate queues!!!!!!!!!that's what I had to do for a most part of an hour :(

Joined ISOC

Since I joined University last year I have always wanted to be part of the Islamic Society. Well this year I signed up to be part of the Islamic Society and through the grace of the Almighty I have become part of the Islamic Society.

We have had our first meeting and had a chance to meet up with the other Sisters. It was a lovely informal meeting, a chance to introduce ourselves and become familiar with our roles and responsibilities.

I have been assigned to organising Islamic lessons for sisters at the University. I don't really know what I am going to teach, but I am hoping to ask sisters on freshers week, get some feedback, see what people want and then maybe go from there. Maybe plan some Tajweed sessions. But will have to see what happens when we go back to university. I already have teaching commitments outside of university and will have to try and fit this into a busy schedule.

I am hoping to keep uptodate with this years blog!!!So keep reading.........

Looking forward to the New Year

It's already August and soon I will be back at university.....My life has changed drastically in the past few months. My Mum has always been my inspiration and the driving force behind my education and I hope that carries me through the upcoming years.

I completed my Undergraduate last year and through the Grace of the Almighty I was able to pass with good pleasing grades. I will, by the will of Allah, start my first year as a Computer Science student at the end of September....so look out for regular update blog entries....

Islamic Awareness Week: Shiekh Suleman Mulla...

The Islamic Awareness week (in my opinion) was the highlight of the University year and topping the bill was Shiekh's speech,which was the highlight of the week. I wasn't able to attend any of the speeches that had happened throughout the week as I have teaching commitments in the evening but I made a special arrangements for this event as I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

There was a great build up to this event with posters and flyers been displayed in the university, each speech was given a title and Shiekh's was 'SIN CITY'. The auditorium was packed to the rafters many of us were sitting on the floor. Obviously this speech was a treat given to us because we raised the most money during charity week.

Last day of the first month

The days are whizzing by and can't believe that it's the last day of the month. Uni work is also piling up....assignments are being issued every week. Alot of the work is research based and so alot of it relies on self study.....and time management.....

The first year is also coming to an end and we have started to look into our options for the next year....I have seen a few things that have cught my eye.Technical computing is something I definately want to look into, but we are going to have special advisors to come and give us professional advice very soon.

I am a bit aprehensive about my options for the coming year...it's been so comfortable this year, the labs have been mainly femlae dominated and so you sometimes feel safe in the enviroment, but'computing' is mainly male dominated and so it worries me.

An Eventful Week

Where shall I begin.........I had drwoned myself in MYSQL database assignment and now I'm finally out of it I can relax with my blog. It's been dead hectic...but the good news is that I have got my assignment done 2 days before the due date and so have got two days of freedom while the others are stressing. My tutor has given us (me and my study buddy friend) 2 days off.

Last week was a hard week....I got a parking fine...nearly ran someone over and had to find a small room and have a good cry. The work was frustrating but that's because I've been putting pressure on myself (I like things done in a certain way, to a certain standard) and to be honest the work is piling up. The assignments and deadlines are coming from all sides...but I am learning to prioritise my things. The home pressure at the minute is very tough.....and that is taking is toll.....I am rushing to and fro from home and Uni...trying to getting home chores and Uni work done.

My tutors are great in that they are understanding....but I feel guilty always giving excuses....being a teacher once myself I know that it's not good for the pupil progress to be absent.

But hey on the bright side...I think I'm doing well...making good steady progress and before I know it the year would've ended. The great thing about UNI is that there is only 24 weeks of teaching, the rest is working and self studying. I had to go in late today....so went for good run and I feel fresh and ready.

Week Ending

Last week ended OK....many lectures were relaxed or cancelled because our tutor was ill...so many of us had a field day. I must say I haven't done any work this weekend, even though I had high hopes of getting the entire assignment done.
It's like the Arabic poet says,"I plan, We plan and Allah does what he wishes"...so I guess that's it....I hope to go in early....and hope to get my work 'by the scruff of the neck'.....

I am looking forward to get back to robotics tomorrow.....

SQL......

Our tutors are too good sometimes, at times this year they have literally sat down with us and talked through the assignment solutions...which we don't deserve. So we used lab times to brainstorm our assignment..which was good. So I have got some solid work done. Sat in front of the computer for most of the day....so all I can see is 'SQL statements' and 'DESC commands'..... whizzing in front of my eyes.

Another good day....got our results for our journals and was awarded a 'first'...it's all coming together....

I wanted to mention something off the topic...In today's society Secular education is really valued in comparison to Islamic education. When we see doctors and teachers we value their title and give them recognition. But in the hereafter the true honours will be awarded to those people who have worked hard to become the inheritors of the of the true wealth.

Empty campus...where is evrybody?

Well yesterday was the first day back @ UNI..to be honest it isn't what I expected. The overall feeling on campus was of emptiness. The place look deserted and empty. I expected freshness after the new year break....as I walked on campus I saw the posters advertising the 'big party' on the first day back. I dunno how many are going to turn up?

It was good to see everyone on the first day..even though I walked in late for the first lecture of the term. I misread the room number on blackboard...good start. We were given a insight of what to expect in the coming term. It is going to be a lot of research based assignments.

Anyway back to the serious stuff.....we got our Maths results back....mixed feelings on the result...but overall satisfied....(I did pass)...as we went through the paper the silly errors became obvious!!!! (you just wish you can have a Chance to re-do the paper...and make up the 10 marks you buckled over).But I have got the 10% I need for the module...40% to pass the computing skills module.

We also started Robotics on Monday in the Creative Computing module....it's amazing. Can't wait to get into it. Some how my tutor has misplaced our 'movie' so it's not uploaded on u-tube yet...but it will be up soon....

Went for Salaah in the afternoon...even the Salaah room was quiet and empty. Met up with some of the sisters..had a quiet lunch.

The Night Before......

I duuno...I am excited that we are going back to University tomorrow....(even though I've barely done any work) I have done the skeleton of my assignment but have yet to put anything down which is SOLID...lol.

I am anxious and nervous but feeling positive about the next term...this is the main bit and we are working towards our exams...........

Well it's been a week into the holidays....and I haven't even looked at my work....don't know if it was a good thing or not...?I have made an intention to make a list of 'TO DO THINGS' but I haven't got round to do it yet.I guess it's been a long week............we had EID and then unexpected family situation which means that I haven't had a chance...but I will be hoping to get down to some work.

It's a sight that I thought I never will see it happen...but it's true...I'm sitting on my bed...on the first day of the winter holiday....RELAXING......it's refreshing and wonderful to know that I don't have to go to any lectures or lab sessions for a good three weeks.

You probably want the low down on the presentations...well they happened on Thursday....I must say we were prepared very well for the day....we had arranged to meet in the morning and go through the presentation...we did..Many were talking about what they were going to wear...!!!!!well it's no difference for me....but I did make an effort of wearing a 'beautiful' Jabbah... I always say...'first impression is last impression'

The presentations took place in the 'Clepham building' so we made our way there a little while before so we got the feel of the room..and the atmosphere....When we got there the room was 'half full' with a mixture of audience...but it was jolly and warm...we sat and watched other group members present their presentations and they were very good..amazing....it's great to see how we have all we have developed creative skills in the pass 11 weeks.

The came our turn.....we were 'up beat' but nervous at the same time....it was smooth and I think we had the audience gripped.....we had their attention and the presentation went well....it lasted 13 minutes (10 minutes was the target)....we finished and the feedback was positive and heartwarming....

The results will be given after winter break or will be posted on the University website.....I have checked the University website and the link has been set up for U Tube...http://www.youtube.com/CYZCreative...please check it out......I don't see mine yet.....but it will up in due time...I hope.... (Ours is the Grand prix type)

I probably will be working on my assignment during the beak and will be posting my progress....Keep the comments coming.....

Animation assignment

I've been dead excited since we started the animation project...and now 10 weeks after having mastered the tools...We are working together to compile our first group assignment and presentation. It's come together and secretly I am really proud of 'Our' work... can't believe that's actually our work. I have stayed up till very late and edited the animation in Movie maker with other graphics sounds. Looks impressive...just have to do the PowerPoint presentation and explain how we created the project.

I am doing my assignment with a Muslim Sister and it's enjoyable and fun. She is understanding and we get on well. The presentation has to be presented before 'ALL' of our group...but may be a bit weird...don't know how others will think of it...or think of me....in my Hijab and Niqab...LOL....(when did that mean anything to me?) I hope I am as good as the others.

Animation Fever....

We are in the final week before we break up for winter break....so it's very exciting....to be honest can't believe that a whole term has gone by...and the blog is still running.

This week we have to do our group presentation...me and my partner have chosen to do a grand Prix theme...where we have designed some cars racing each other....our work will be uploaded onto U tube very soon.

It's been fun and exciting and to be honest can't believe how far 'we' and 'I' have come. When you start anything you think....how am I ever going to get to the end. But it's amazing how Allah takes care everything without you even knowing.

I haven't been to the Salaah room lately and to be honest I miss going there...I wonder how all the sisters are getting on.but all my spare time I rush home to attend to commitments there...I'm neither here nor there at the moment. Keep faith in Allah and he will take care of you.....

Surprise...Shocked......

Since University has began I have wore 'my veil' throughout lectures and lab sessions, even though we mostly only have women present.....however last week I needed to adjust my head gear and so lifted my veil...I was shocked to see many of my group members as they gasped with awwwww and ohhhhhh.................at first I didn't even realise that they were indicating towards me but when I saw 20 pair of eyes all looking in one direction it dawned on me that it was 'me' they were looking at. They couldn't understand the different person I was beneath the veil.They had imagined me so different as they only get to see my eyes....they said it wasn't me and that I was a whole 'new person'.....they didn't know the 'new me' and wanted the old one back...it was hilarious....I smiled for the rest of the day:)

Teachers Advice.....

Taking advice from our elders helps us become better people...we sometimes feel that we are right and we have all the, but our elders always make us see each action thorough wisdom and knowledge. I always consult my teacher whenever I embark on any new project...but this time I hadn't made my mind up and wasn't very sure if I was going to Uni. So I left it too late for any advice and the next thing I know Ramadhan has started....during this month when things were finalised...I had a dream of my teacher and she seemed 'unhappy' that I hadn't rang her in a while....but when I eventually got round to it she has left to go for Umrah.....(lucky her) and so i never got to speak to her.
Anyway just this week I spoke to her and told her about Uni...she advise me never to forget 'who you are'...always a Muslim first....She told me not to change and that I shouldn't ever have to compromise my faith for my studies...I told her that University was a challenge and that to observe Hijab is the greatest task...She advised me that I mustn't get wrapped up in the modern thinking of University and let this cloud my judgement regarding matters of my Faith. STEADFAST....was the key word....and looking back form the conversation we had it's all very true.
When I walk on campus I can feel the awkwardness at times...but I check my intention and have hope that Allah will grant me the strength to see each day through.

Week 7.....

Asslamualikum,

Well the term is getting near to the end and we are in week 7 and the work is easing up and getting along nicely. When I enrolled into University my former colleagues advised me that the Salaah room is the safe heaven and to be honest for the past few weeks that's where I have been spending alot of my time. I have made friends with many sisters and they have given me alot of support and courage. I have seen 'loads' of sisters in Hijab and that's has been heartwarming....nothing should stand in the way of acquiring knowledge. I think if you make it an issue then it becomes an issue....head down and get on with it...is my motto. I have had no problems and I am happy to speak to people...University is huge and there are loads of different people, all dressed in differently with the same aim....to get something at the end.

British Summer 'Time' Ends

Time is a the most valuable word of this week...as you may have noticed no entries this week because I have been very busy this week. After a 'relaxing' week this week has been packed with work,assignments,deadlines and more assignments. My tutors have started to say that the work has strated to kick in....but this is what I wanted..Overall the work has been enjoying and very good.

Since the 'Time' Change I have had to work around salaah times....to be honest it has been amazing, being constantly in the remeberence of Allah and being contious about time.

Relax Week...

This week has been a relaxed week....no scheduled timetable and so we came in when we wanted to...ensuring that all our work was done...(of course).We had appraisals on Monday with our tutuors. Spent a lot of my time on my own this week as my group members came in at their own time. I am just get use to making 3-d models..finally....it's really fiddly and can get frustrating...but patient is getting me through.

Campus seems to be quiet...I did see a charity stall on campus. Some university students were doing various activities in order to raise money for the children of the third world countries. They had a stall outside SU and were selling cookies and other food novelties.

Other than that not much happening this week...back to normal next week.

Maths....Binary Code....

Got early to Uni so went to the Prayer Room and freshen myself up....did Wudhu and being Friday sat down to pray...:)It's just lovely to be in an environment where you can be yourself...

It's the end of the week...and thanks to the tutors we have relax..reading week next week....all smiles...

The Prayer Room

The AGM meeting meant that lectures and lab sessions were cancelled...:) my team members went to Maryland for lunch...I didn't feel like going and besides I didn't want to put myself in an awkward position...(will explain later)....I went to the Library and browsed around for books but the most important part of my discovery was finding the Prayer Room...as I entered the Prayer Room I felt the warmth of sisterhood and Unity..it was beautiful..it felt peaceful and I felt so in the 'right place'.

The Prayer Room
The room consists of many designated areas...One area of the room resembles the layout of the mosque..there is an eating area where you can enjoy eating without being 'watched' or having to hide behind the veil....:) For the first time in a while I enjoyed my 'salad sandwich'...sisters walked in performed wudhu (ablution), smiled and greeted each other. Some sisters were sitting and chatting, others were praying....the call for Prayer was sounded....it made my heart flutter....it was beautiful!!!

i asked one of the sister that i wanted to join the Islamic Society...she did promise that she will get back to me...so I'm waiting...

Went home early....

A New Week...New chapter

Where were we...I'm feeling much better today than I was yesterday....so I guess I have start from yesterday....(15th Oct 2007)when I walked out of Uni yesterday I felt empty and till today had butterflies fluttering in my stomach...I was given a 'business card' by one of the team members inviting me to church if I ever wanted to talk and that is when I became aware that one of the team members is a Pastor (priest).....which actually is cool:) it makes me feel that I'm not the only one putting my beliefs before my studies...and comparing notes and teachings from the Qur'an and the Bible is better that some of the lab sessions...

I explained fully to 'some' of my team members that I am an active religious worker..and like them religion is close to my heart,faith keeps me going...but I felt that i didn't want to them to think that it is all I go on about..and to be frank...I do...and I enjoy it...because @ dinner hour that is mostly the topic of discussion...of course like many people...the Veil is top of the agenda...but I don't mind...
On the topic of the veil....I saw a Sister on campus yesterday (15th October 2007) in the full veil and I greeted her to compliment her that it was nice to see someone like me...but unfortunately she was from Leicester Uni...:(

Being around my friends and team members it keeps my faith in check and reminds me that I have to be practicing so I can be an example for others....we were walking to my car and we crossed paths with another Muslim sister..(whom I didn't greet) and was asked why I didn't greet her....I was left thinking that it is the small details that makes me complete and be an example for others ....and that's what's going to keep me my spirits up.

BTW..about my subject change (chuckle)..I was very lonely and confused by the end of last week and was very happy that Eid celebrations interrupted the 'new timetable' that I had chosen...the lecture that I sat in was very good...but I felt awkward...I didn't feel that I belong there....I never knew anybody which made it even more difficult, had heaps of catching up to do....and to be honest I was done with introductions and first day nerves and didn't want to put myself through any of that AGAIN...so I'm back where I started,with people who I can smile with and who have accepted me as their team member. I am enjoying the work even though some of it (most) is easy...'one step at a time'...3d animation is the best I am enjoying exploring new interfaces....tutors are lovely...they have given me bags of support and without them I would be clueless...

I was asked about being a student rep for the girls group...It was nice to feel that my team members have faith in me...but I already have too many responsibilities and wouldn't be able to commit myself whole heratedly, so I declined....but I have faith in the Student Rep chosen by all...thumbs up for Vicki

A test of strength

Well two days late...but nevertheless here is the story so far.....to be honest being Ramadhan and the last few days been dead busy with Eid preparations.Me and one of the class students have been looking at other options, and we have found something interesting to go into, something challenging and interesting. Just waiting for the course leader to get back to us.

To be honest sometimes you feel a bit funny or even weird being the only one who is finding the university experience daunting, but when you speak to other students you find the you're not the only one.

Well it's been a hectic few days and don't know where to begin....we have been transferred onto the new course...my friend partner has had a change of heart so I'm on my own :(...feeling really lonely now. I don't know..I'm going to sit in the labs for this week and see how this goes. I have looked at the labs notes and it all looks all funny and maybe it's the wrong decision.....

End of the Week....

Well that's the first week out of the way (phew)...had a taste of all the lessons to come, to be honest I don't where I was today?The course I enrolled for at the start of the year.....well it's really easy and I feel I can do better. It's not challenging enough...I don't feel like I am gaining anything NEW...maybe because I am a mature student..who knows..It's not only me, but there is someone else in my class that feels the same way, so we are going to speak to someone on Monday and maybe (hopefully) jump a year.

I did speak to my tutors during Freshers week but they told me I was in the right place...but I don't seem to be feeling that way.The lessons have been fine....but fine they have been...nothing special..I don't seem to be having that 'buzz' (the feeling) about attending the lessons like I should. I look forward to going, but when I'm there all seems just very normal.

I would love to jump a year...It's computing I want to do..but it's the area of computing that is confusing....well we will have to wait and see...so watch this space.

It's funny how they say,'you learn something new everyday' that been me this week...I've learnt so much about other religions that I was may have been unaware of.For example, How every religion fast so differently.

Setting a good example is an important factor when you are around others...keep on striving and working hard to be a living example for others.

Reflection....

To be honest I don't know how to 'title' this day...?University learning is not difficult, to be honest it's not even challenging. But learning in a new environment is different can be a bit weird, new teachers, new surroundings and room locations can be a bit of a teaser....I still haven't learnt my 'student number' ...which is annoying because I have to take out my 'student card' out on every log in(it has a photo ID of myself)...also need to get the hang of room number combination or else....

Just generally thinking....the greatest test in University or any other mixed environment; is that you have to safe guard your heart,eyes, ears and thoughts from unlawful things. The most important thing that I have learnt (or am learning) is that you have to keep in mind, that even though you have come to university to learn you mustn't let yourself be caught up in anything that displeases the Creator.

University houses all kinds of people, so wearing a veil or headscarf or having a beard is no big deal it's how you wear it...of course many people may have questions, but I guess....they will be answered in time to come....feel free to ask....

An eventful Day; Test of faith

Phew......what a day it has been so far....gt here fine and lab session was good...

Just got back from lunch and waitng for the tutor to make an entrance...............
Sitting round the table in the SC over luch we had a healthy and constructive discussion about religion and beliefs. I don't remember how it actually started but of course we all are Allah's (God's) creation but our beliefs make us different.Some memebrs of the team were trying to convince me that Trinity even existed!!!I mean how can God be three when he is the only One. I don't buy the trinity theory at all....Allah sent his messenger to this world to spread his word but he didn't come as 'a son' to the people and neither did he come as 'spirit' to guide mankind.

Almighty Allah is one and only he has no partner and no son and he sent the messengers to this world as Humans with his message t0 guide mankind to the true and righteous path.

Will come back to this later....lab session is about to start...

Well this has been niggling me all evening....The trinity debate.....I have no doubt in my mind that Allah the Almighty is free from any partners. For the rest of the day I had this bitter taste in my mouth and felt deeply hurt by their teachings. I hope that over the year I can convince them otherwise. I don't want to bombard them with loads of information just yet! Watch this space!

I want to give a special mention to the lifts...they are over crowded very dodgy!!!!

A Normal Day

Today was a normal day.....we had a lecture cancelled so had to go in late :) Just had a single lab session and an 'unstaffed' lab session. My study buddy is very inquisitive about the veil ...which is healthy...keep it coming!!!

One of my study buddy mentioned a valuable point, she said she couldn't believe that we even lived in Leicester because walking onto campus is a whole new world!!!! A world that we never knew existed!!!!

Just a point to mention..saw the mascot today and took a good look at him/her...cute

The First Day.......

Well today was a day packed with mixed emotions....I was driving home from Uni thinking about my blog entry.

Clocked in @ 8:30am to collect my timetable which is to be honest 'OK' even though I would love a day off!!!!I queued with other first year students all waiting to collect timetables......i found myself standing in front of of two gents from b'ham (could tell from their accents) and from their conversation I figured out that one of the lads was a Muslim coz he was talking about fasting and doing suhoor...........(early morning breakfast)....nice

First Lecture was @ 11 am so I had enough tyme to get home and get up date with some of my praying....but you wouldn't believe it i was late for my first lecture........coz i couldn't find any parking so i parked in town and ended up walking up half the way, which i am feeling the aftermath of...

Overall day was good, we have been spilt up into two groups and have a only women group and a only male group...this make it a little more comfortable for the likes of me....learnt a huge amount and can't wait to strat creating 3-d animation...sounds cool....

Just wanted to give a mention to dinner hour...sat in SC (student Centre) with some lovely group members whom i am really making Friends with....the SC was packed with loads of students and saw many Muslims which was heartwarming.....

"First impression; Last impression"

First impressions are everything and to be honest walking on Campus on the first week was very daunting...I didn't know what to expect. I looked odd and 'felt' every ones eyes on me....I was very apprehensive and felt like a child on the first day of school. I constantly checked my timetable to be sure that i was @ the right place.

I kept my gaze down and minded my own business...all I can remember are groups of people on the corners of the street with placards and freebies....I remember seeing a mascot and the welcome party for Freshers.....Campus was absolutely packed out..I walked the grounds of Campus 'on my own' exploring the buildings and becoming familiar with the new surroundings.

I walked beyond the Portland building and found a quiet area...I had two hours to kill off....and no car (because there is never any parking) so I sat on a bench and read a book and watched the swans glide along the water...but it was FREEZING so I decided to go into town...eventually I went to town and wandered around a few shops and ended up in Waterstones where I treated myself to 3 for 2 book offer....I haven't yet made any serious 'study buddies' but hope to do in the coming weeks.....

Well it's the FRESHERS week @ University and this is my first entry.....you may be wondering why this BLOG even exists. Well here it is.....I am a VERY NEW STUD3NT and wanted to do something to kick start my Uni Experience...so i decided that in the 'technology world', a blog would be the most up to date answer.
